João Guilherme Ripper is one of the most prolific composers of Brazilian opera music. He is author of the opera “Piedade”, which premiered in Rio in 2012 and which was featured in the opera series of the Board of Colón Theater of Buenos Aires in its 2017 and 2018 seasons. In 2019, the company Música e Texto is set to offer another one of Ripper’s works: “O Diletante”, a comedic opera written in 2014 about the homonymous play by Martins Pena. When writing the libretto, Ripper transferred the action from the first half of the 19th century to the Copacabana of the 1950’s, when Rio de Janeiro first discovered Bossa Nova.
